Seatrade Cruise Masterclass wraps on a poetic note

In the 450-year-old room where poet William Wordsworth lived as a student at St. John’s College, Cambridge University, Seatrade celebrated the farewell dinner of its Cruise Masterclass and honored one of the lecturers, John Marden, who recently retired after 43 years with P&O Cruises/Carnival UK.

Marden’s cruising life began as a navigating cadet and culminated as Carnival UK’s director of corporate and international affairs. He recapped highlights of a career he called ‘a great journey’ and described cruising as ‘most important, a people industry. There is a network of people around the world who make it work.’

Present were students spanning the globe, from Canada, China, Dubai, France, Greece, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Trinidad & Tobago and the UK.

Seatrade chairman Chris Hayman also recognized masterclass lecturers Carnival Corp. & plc’s Giora Israel, DVB Bank’s Richard Horton-Jansen, V.Ships Leisure’s Per Bjørnsen, Lloyd’s Register’s Richard Goodwin, Thomas Miller Claims Management’s Stephen Hunt, Cruise & Maritime Services’ Richard Bastow, Cruise Ventures’ John Hanbidge and former Cruise Down Under chairman Richard Doyle.

In addition, the week included lectures by Fincantieri’s Maurizio Cergol (just in from the launch of Holland America Line’s Nieuw Amsterdam), SMC Design’s Andy Yuill (fresh from the introduction of his latest ship, Norwegian Epic), analyst Tony Peisley, SeaConsult’s Helge Grammerstorf, the Passenger Shipping Association’s Bill Gibbons and Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ Nigel Lingard.

JT Consulting’s John Turgoose, an alumnus of the first Seatrade Cruise Masterclass held at Oxford University’s Keble College in 1999, supported Marden’s remarks that it’s a people business and urged the 2010 graduating class to keep up the global network of contacts as they progress through their cruise careers.
